What is It?
Vit B3 (niacin, niacinamdie, nicotinic acide, nicotinamid) like all other B vitamins, is water soluble. Niacin is essential for synthesis of sex hormones, cortisone, thyroxine and insulin. Necessary for healthy nervous system and brain function. Using the amino acid tryptophan, the body can manufacture its own nacin; however a body deficient B1, B2 and B6 will not be able to produce niacin from tryptophan.
Recommended dosages?
Vit B3 is usually measured in milligrams. The RDA is 13-19 mg. for adults
Deficiency?
Lack of niacin can bring about negative personality changes (Dr. Mindell). Also can result in Pellegra. Pellegra is classically described by "the four D's": diarrhea, dermatitis, dementia, and death (Wikipedia)
Toxicity?
According to Dr. Mindell, large amounts can interfere with the control of uric acid, bringing on attacks of gout in people who are prone to this disease
Best Sources?
- Some of the best natural foods sources include:
Fish, lean meat, live
Whole wheat products, brewyers yeast, wheat germ
Eggs
Roasted peanuts
Avocados
Dates, figs and prunes
Supplement?
If one can get niacin from dietary sources, what is the need for supplements? From my research, I have not found a good answer to that questions; but, according to Dr. Mindell, dosages are usually found in 50-1000 mg (tabulets, capsules or powder form).
What is your experience with Vit B3? Do you take it daily? If so, what is your source, dietary or supplementary? I look forward to your comments.
